The Department of Wood Science at the University of British Columbia is the largest Department in Canada offering wood science and forest products education. It offers undergraduate and post-graduate degrees that equip students for challenging careers in the Canadian forest products industries. Faculty members are engaged in extensive research programs ranging from the fundamental to applied industry-specific problem solving in the following areas; forest products marketing, business management, systems analysis and performance assessment; wood anatomy and resource characterization; wood chemistry and biotechnology; wood composites; wood physics and drying; wood products engineering and mechanics; and wood protection. Through the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing, the Department has notable strengths in the field of value-added wood processing including tool design and machining, wood finishing and environmental facilities management.
