The Faculty of Forestry and Geomatics' Council at Laval University officially instigated the Centre de recherche sur le bois (CRB) in May 2002. The Centre's mission is to bring together scientists and research groups from various universities and industry in order to promote research and development, and train experts through hands-on industrial experience in the fields of basic and applied research relating to wood, including wood processing, its use in innovative products and marketing. The CRB activities cover three main areas: 1) basic properties of wood; 2) mechanical and chemical wood processing; and 3) development of new wood products.
